Abstract
Modernizm dönemi sanat alanındaki gelişimi, geçmiş stillerin kural ve anlayışı yerine, yeniliğin, deneyciliğin, özgün düşünce ve biçimin yer almasıyla gerçekleşmiştir. Çeşitli toplumsal ve siyasi gelişmelerin yaşandığı, iki dünya savaşı arasında ortaya çıkan ve Modernizm ile ilişkilendirilen etkili akımlardan biri olan Gerçeküstücülük; I. Dünya Savaşı’nın ardından Paris’te örgütlü bir akım olarak etkisini kaybetmiş ve Dada sonrası bir gelişme olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Dönemin kültürel, toplumsal ve düşünsel yapısına uygun bir şekilde gelişen modern sanat anlayışı, geçmiş dönemlerin etkisinde kalarak varlığını sürdürmüştür. Akımın lideri André Breton'a göre, Sürrealizm açıkça her şeyden önce bir devrim hareketi olduğunu ve bu kavramın gerçek dışı anlamında değil aksine gerçeğin insanda yaratmış olduğu iz düşümü şeklinde tanımlamıştır. Sürrealizm akımının amacı tutucu değerlerin süslemelerini terk ederek bilincimizin kontrolündeki zihinsel aşamaları, sonuçları ne olursa olsun muhakeme ve mantık açısından özgürleştirmektir. Bu çalışma, 20. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan birçok sanat hareketi ve akımları içerisinden Sürrealizm hareketinin oluşum ve gelişim süreci kapsamında sanatçı René Margritte eserlerini konu alan bir çalışmadır. Sanatçının idealist ve natürel tarzda dilin, imgenin gerçekliğini birebir yansıttığı anlayışı üzerine kurulu ‘Özgürlüğün Eşiğinde’ adlı eseri ayrıca detaylı olarak incelenecektir.

Abstract
The development in the field of art in the period of modernism was realized by the fact that innovation, experimentation, original thought and form took place instead of the rules and understanding of previous styles. Surrealism, one of the influential movements that emerged between the two world wars and associated with Modernism, where various social and political developments took place; After the First World War, it lost its influence as an organized movement in Paris and emerged as a post-Dada development. The understanding of modern art, which developed in accordance with the cultural, social and intellectual structure of the period, continued its existence under the influence of the past periods. According to André Breton, the leader of the movement, surrealism clearly defined it as a revolutionary movement first and foremost, and not in the unreal sense of this concept, but rather as the projection of reality on people. The aim of the Surrealism movement is to abandon the embellishments of conservative values and liberate the mental stages under the control of our consciousness in terms of reasoning and logic, whatever the consequences. This study is a study about the works of artist René Margritte within the scope of the formation and development process of the Surrealism movement, among many art movements and movements that emerged in the 20th century. The artist's work called 'On the Verge of Freedom', which is based on the understanding that language in an idealistic and natural style reflects the reality of the image, will also be examined in detail.
